Buying a Waterproof Running Jacket – What to look for
Similar to waterproof pants, there are a few things to keep in mind when looking for, and choosing the best waterproof running jacket. We’ve outlined exactly what you should keep in mind.
Most running jackets that we reviewed were constructed of 100% nylon. Others were polyester and nylon-spandex blends. These fabrics stand up well against wet, water prone environments, especially the 100% nylon designs. The type of material can also contribute significantly to the overall weight of the jacket. Nylon and polyester are both lightweight materials, but nylon, although more expensive, is more durable and weather-resistant. The lighter the jacket the better, but you don’t want to trade off weight for durability and design. So, fabric is definitely something to keep in mind when shopping around for the best running rain jackets.
Good waterproof running jackets should be both, waterproof and breathable. The goal here is to choose a jacket that prevents the rain from getting in but allows the sweat and internal heat to get out. A jacket that is versatile, and allows for great insulation in freezing temperatures, yet offers optimum ventilation in warm conditions, would be the ideal pick. At the end of the day, breathability is equally as important as waterproofing, since precipitation and perspiration can both lead to discomfort all the same.
Weight & Size
The majority of running jackets come lightweight. It’s a matter of figuring out exactly which one suits you best. Some models are big enough and roomy enough to allow for multiple upper clothes layers beneath. However, other running jackets can run small on the size and would be better suited with light t-shirts and vests. Of course, it also depends on the environments and conditions you’ll be exposed to. We would never recommend you wear a light t-shirt under a slim fitting waterproof jacket in frigid temperatures. However, ideally, the lighter your jacket, the more freedom of range you will have, the more comfortable you will be and subsequently the longer your endurance.
Comfort is equally as important as the other points since the more comfortable you are the more enjoyable your outdoor experience. Finding the correct fit and size, the correct material, and the perfect balance of waterproofing and breathability, the better. A cold, bitter jog won’t nearly be as fun and enduring as a cozy, comfy run. We all got into the outdoors for the sheer enjoyment, and it’s almost completely useless to have the most comfortable boots, pants, and backpack but a thin, flimsy, ‘not-so-waterproof’ jacket.
